Life of Pi X Light

Ripple Light is an ambient light that captures the unique visual quality of movement as light shines through a body of water. With special qualities of iridescent film, the light creates a magical and immersive experience .
Visual language
Ripple Light takes inspiration from the lighting effects in the movie, Life of Pie, along with other sources regarding gradient and mixture of colors, diffusion of light, and the idea of incorporating water as a material.
Context research
After visiting numerous lighting stores in New York City, I decided that an ambient light will be the best way to express what I envision Ripple Light to be. Something that focuses on aesthetics and sense of presence.
Ideation
This is the stage where I explored the form and methods of introducing water into the piece. To successfully pair up the risky combination, the design needs compartments that separate water and electricals.
Prototyping
With light refracting while passing through different materials, such as, iridescent film, water, and acrylic, the Ripple Light projects a smooth transitioning gradient to the surrounding.
The next step would be to add in a water pump to create prominent and more consistent ripple effect.
