What is comfort?

Role: Designer

Comfort 1 is an exploration on what comfort is, in the embodiment of a chair that encourages different ways of sitting.

Trying to complete the given task of designing something related to comfort, I found out that comfort is different for everyone and there is just no concrete rules of what it should be.

Research

I learned that there is only a fine line between comfort and discomfort. People tend find comfort in distinct poses that resonate with their body and mental state, and those poses are not just sitting up right with their backs straight.

Early Ideation

To find a form that is visually and functionally ambiguous while resembling a chair. The idea is so that users will not have too much presumption while coming upon the chair.

Digital Modeling

The final design is a form that allows countless ways to interact. Users can choose to sit upright, cross their legs, curl up, or in whatever positions they come up with.

Prototyping

Building the model with cardboard and plaster cast due to lack of material and tools gave the chair unexpected textures that I find myself liking quite a bit. In order to best translate the beauty of seamless organic compound curves as well as the interesting texture on the surface, the chair is imagined to be made of plastic, fiberglass, or metal cast when it is manufactured.
